History and evolution of men’s fashion.

Do you want to know the history of men’s fashion? Well, keep reading because in this article we are going to show you the story in a summarized way. If you read history, you will be able to realize how we have arrived at today’s fashion, so it is worth knowing the history of fashion. But first of all, I want to make it clear that history is very long and very varied, so we are going to focus on the history of the 20th century until now, to make everything simpler.

History of men’s fashion in the 1920s:

We begin the article by talking about men’s fashion in the 1920s. At this time, men mainly dressed in 3 pieces . These pieces were a jacket, vest and pants, that is, we could say that they were very well dressed. The suits were usually gray, blue or brown and normally the higher-class suits were always made in a personalized way through the different tailor shops that existed throughout the cities of the country. This way they managed to go to work very well prepared.

If a man had to dress a little more informally for an event, then he tended to opt for bright suits and in some cases printed suits. This type of clothing was accompanied by a hat and two-color shoes, often black and white being the perfect combination for this type of clothing.

Men’s fashion in the 1930s:

Fashion changed slightly. The suits became striped inspired by American movies. In addition, they also opted for accessories, such as straw hats and plain ties. Of course, the fashion for two-tone shoes was still very present during this decade.

Men’s fashion in the 40s:

During this decade suits began to evolve. This means that pockets without wings were beginning to be a reality, while vests were becoming less and less important in the men’s wardrobe. In a way it was due to the lack of fabric due to the war.

Pants began to modernize and therefore the hems began to disappear, as did the pleats.

Due to the war, synthetic fibers and buttons became very fashionable with the aim of making fairly simple garments.

Men’s fashion during the 50s:

Men’s suits continued  to be the main protagonist among men who went to work, mainly among men who worked in business. Of course, the tuxedo with a bow tie is beginning to take center stage, which is why some men begin to wear this type of clothing.

On the other hand, youth fashion was beginning to evolve . In this case, jeans began to take center stage accompanied by leather jackets. The objective once again was to copy the American actors of the time.

Men’s fashion during the 60s and 70s:

It can really be said that during these two decades fashion made an important change. Of course, before going into details I want to make it clear that fashion changed in all aspects, both in clothing, accessories and hairstyles.

The variety of clothing was becoming more common . For example, many people opted for tight suits, especially when going to work. While young people followed the disco style or the mod style depending on their ideologies. And the most modern ones opted directly for striking clothing in which case the prints were floral or wild.

During the 70s, the “Saturday night fever” trend clearly prevailed. This type of fashion made the extravagant make sense and the clubs were filled with this type of clothing. Of course, within formal fashion, 3-piece suits once again gained a lot of prominence, while black and white colors were the big winners of the decade ( source ).

End of the century fashion

Fashion in the last decades of the century evolved a lot, which allowed styles to expand considerably.

For example, in the 80s the punk style stood out a lot . This type of clothing stood out for its spiked and torn clothes. It should also be noted that television greatly influenced men’s casual wardrobe.

At the same time, haute couture began to lose prominence in favor of big brands . Everyone wanted to wear brand names to demonstrate economic power.

In the 90s, rapper and grunge style clothing prevailed among many young people, although there was really no style that won the battle. Men stopped following fashion a little and began to wear a type of clothing with which they felt comfortable. Levis brand pants were one of the big winners, as were the Converse All Star sneakers, which were the favorites during the last years of the 20th century. As a complement we highlight the Rayban glasses. This brand arrived with great force and is still in high demand.

Men’s fashion in the early years of the 21st century:

Thanks to the media and freedom of expression, it can be said that men have begun to dress a little more freely. What’s more, thanks to the Internet, it is becoming easier to find a style of dress, hence the trends on the street are very different. Of course, it should be noted that some fashions are based on fashions from past decades, hence it could be said that what is old is beginning to be in fashion once again. Among the fashions that are coming in strongly, we can highlight streetstyle and hypster style. This last style makes people wear a really very marked look.

And if we look at youth men’s fashion, we can see how t-shirts with jeans and sneakers are a very predominant and comfortable style.
